Joint College of Education "Teacher Education Program" (I): Experiencing Yiwu International Academy

The Teacher Trainee Literacy Enhancement Initiative is one of the four major undergraduate training programs of our college, and it is also a key link to strengtnen the foundation of our college’s talent cultivation.

The Teacher Education Enhancement Program's educational apprenticeship project is a fundamental program and an important initiative to practice the spirit of educators in the new era.

 

On 8 March, under the leadership of Dean Huang Xiao and relevant teachers, all students of the  joint education institute visited Yiwu International Academy, a high-end and exquisite international school, to participate in the inaugural education novitiate activity. The objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the front-line education scene and experience the real campus life and vibrant classroom teaching. The novitiate activity comprised two parts: a campus tour and classroom observation.

      The first stop on the tour was the visiting session. We were greeted by Principal Song and Teacher Liu Jiuyu of the Primary School of Yiwu International Academy. The impressive administrative building, the elegant teaching building, the clean dining room, the modern theatre, and the well-equipped sports field were all on display.

Visiting the classroom:

    The second part of this noviciate is the classroom teaching observation. The first class was taught by Mr. Yu, the deputy school of Yiwu International Academy. He taught the fourth-grade text, Cat. Mr. Yu's class had clear priorities and complete structure. His classes are not only interesting but also have a variety of teaching methods, applying artificial intelligence technology to the classroom. Mr. Yu's teaching style is characterised by a high level of enthusiasm, a focus on student-centred learning, and a commitment to effective teaching methods. His classes are well-structured and utilise a variety of teaching techniques, including the use of artificial intelligence technology.

       The second lesson observed by the students was Using Number Pairs to Determine the Position, taught by Mr. Wang Xiaohuan, the math leader of Yiwu International Academy (Beijing Normal University Edition, Grade 4 Volume 1). Through a video, Ms. Wang took logistics as the starting point, and organically combined the knowledge of number pairs with real-life applications. Ms. Wang's class has a complete structure and proper rhythm. She is adept at integrating the class's knowledge points with their interest and cultural understanding of mathematics. Additionally, she not only disseminates mathematical knowledge but also encourages students to think critically and holistically aligns the classroom teaching links with their recent development zone.

Experience sharing:

      Following the highly informative lecture, two teachers shared their experiences in preparing the lesson, allowing our students to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of one minute on stage, ten years of success off stage. Teacher Yu Dong shared his ideas of classroom design with The Novice's Learning Ability Classroom Exploration. His classroom design consists of three parts: study plan first, group cooperation and modelling, so that students can appreciate the theoretical support and hard work behind an excellent classroom design. Ms. Wang shared her ideas on classroom design from five aspects: creating context, stimulating inquiry; grid creation, step-by-step abstraction, understanding number pairs; return to life, location game; breaking through the cognitive boundary, expanding the connotation and extension of number pairs; review and summary of the extension. The lesson preparation experience shared by the two excellent teachers not only familiarised the students with the basic links of the class, but also helped them further establish the belief and pursuit of cultivating the teaching field, teaching happily and loving life.

      President Xie of Yiwu International Academy then delivered a speech. He expressed his welcome to us and encouraged us to persevere, live up to our potential and drive forward. Professor Huang Xiao, Dean of the college, presented the two teachers with lecture certificates, thanking them for their excellent contributions and hard work.

The College has announced its intention to continue implementing the Teacher Education Literacy Enhancement Program. This initiative is designed to cultivate advanced, complex and outstanding educators with an educator's spirit, open global competence, solid disciplinary core literacy, excellent international communication skills, and comprehensive and real problem-solving skills. The College will continue to make efforts to cultivate talents with the spirit of an educator.

Insights from an apprenticeship

While visiting the school, I was inspired by the students' well-organised routine and the school's philosophy of cultivating well-rounded talents. In the two excellent teachers' classroom, I learned that as future teachers, we should pay attention to the study plan first, encourage students to work in small groups, use modelling to guide children to think, and strive to do vivid teaching. We should start with the learning plan, encourage students to work in groups and use modelling to guide children to think. Today's apprenticeship has taught me a lot. I've learned many teaching methods and I'm determined to study hard and improve myself. This was my first internship since college. I was called a teacher for the first time. I sat at the back of the classroom instead of at a desk and listened to a lesson. I was surprised and excited. In the classroom, I saw the teacher use questions to help students understand the article. I saw the teacher combine maths with real life. I also saw students discuss ideas in groups and help each other. I hope to become a teacher like these two. (Xingtong Guo)

 

Apprenticeship is the start of a teacher trainee's career. This time, we went to Yiwu Public School to listen to Mr Yu Dong teaching the text Cat in language and teacher Wang Xiaoxin teaching Determining Position by Pairing Numbers in maths. Mr Yu's language is funny and he is very comfortable in the classroom. The Learning Power Classroom showed us a new way of teaching. Ms. Wang also showed us that maths can be fun. This internship activity helps us understand and remember what we have learned in the classroom. It also helps us become better professionals and gives us a good foundation for working in education in our country.(Churong Zhang)

 

As a teacher trainee, I was honoured to come to Yiwu Public Schools for my apprenticeship. It was a valuable opportunity. I realised the importance of teachers' professionalism and educational skills.The teachers are excellent at teaching and guiding students. They make learning fun and easy. The teachers can change their teaching plan to suit the students. I also saw how much the teachers love their job.Teachers are enthusiastic, pay attention to students, and answer questions. Teachers are important. They make students feel warm and safe. Finally, I realised teachers have a responsibility to help students. Teachers must teach knowledge and help students grow up healthily and develop their character and abilities. This requires a lot of effort and responsibility. This makes me more determined in my career choice. This internship opportunity makes me cherish my future career even more. I will work hard to become an excellent teacher.This apprenticeship has made me realise how important teaching is and that I want to be a teacher. I will use this experience to improve my skills and become the best teacher I can be.(Bijun He)
