On March 12, the teachers and students of the Joint Education Institute of Zhejiang Normal University and University of Kansas held the first internship seminar in the 16th teaching building. On March 8,under the leadership of Dean Huang Xiao and relevant teachers, the students of the Joint Education Institute of Zhejiang Normal University and University of Kansas, went to Yiwu International Academy to carry out the first internship activity. This activity allowed students to experience the classroom atmosphere of quality primary schools and gained a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge related to primary education. In order to enable everyone to have a deeper understanding and insight of this internship activity and exchange their gains and doubts with each other, the two classes held internship seminars respectively. In this activity, students actively shared their internship experiences, focusing on discussing the advantages of internship courses, the shortcomings and areas for improvement.
PART 1
Firstly, Mrs. Zhang, the head teacher of Class 1, gave guidance on observation courses, explaining why and how to observe them.
Observing courses is not only the requirement of the training program of the Joint Education Institute of Zhejiang Normal University and University of Kansas, but also the characteristics and advantages of the Elementary education. They are also the fast track for us to transform from normal students to prospective teachers and then to teachers. Therefore, it is essential to conduct internship and observe courses regularly. To achieve efficient observation of courses, we need to follow the six points mentioned above.
The last part of the seminar activity was the group presentation, when everyone entered the poster-making and discussion-sharing session. Each group expressed their unique insights into the internship courses. Each group made interesting posters based on their discussion results, which were both clear and vivid.
Many groups mentioned the advantages of the courses during the sharing: the adoption of advance study plans and scenario introduction, which were clever and interesting; the clear framework and organization of the courses, from simple to complex; the teachers are good at activate the classroom atmosphere, resulting in a good learning environment; the teachers' skillful use of heuristic teaching to guide students; and the adoption of group cooperation, discussion, and sharing models.
Meanwhile, most groups also mentioned some issues in the classroom, such as poor control of class time, less than ideal PPT production, and a lack of group cooperation and communication. These are not only reflections after listening to the courses but also valuable experiences for us to teach in the future.
PART2
Teacher Ding, the homeroom teacher of Class 2, guided students to engage in a special discussion on teaching methods and ideas worth learning for the two different styles of mathematics and Chinese classes. The students actively expressed their opinions, shared what they saw and felt during the internship process, and accumulated classroom experience and teaching methods. For example, as mentioned by the students, in the Chinese class, technological means were used to attract students' interest and attention, and the intelligent robot Doubao was added to increase the fun of the classroom. Classroom discussions and reports were carried out in the form of group cooperation, and students of different levels were given equal opportunities to cultivate their Chinese literacy and showcase themselves according to their aptitudes. In the mathematics class, the familiar express delivery robot was used to introduce number pairs, which not only activated the classroom atmosphere but also connects mathematics with daily life. The class progressed step by step, using known knowledge to introduce unknown knowledge. First, students were asked to use familiar up, down, left, and right to indicate the position of objects, and then introduced a simpler expression method of number pairs, laying a foundation for future learning of three-dimensional space. Although the seminar has ended, our learning journey is still continuing. In the future, the students of Joint Education Institute of Zhejiang Normal University and University of Kansas will continuously improve their professional competence as teachers through learning, laying a solid foundation for their future career as teachers! They will strive to become better students of Zhejiang Normal University!
